Method

As you would expect, we have a range of exploration and test equipment at our disposal, from the simple to the sophisticated, all operated by our own skilled personnel. Nearly all of the work is carried out "in-house".

Our site teams always give careful consideration on how the following methods are chosen and combined together.

  • Boreholes
  • Subgrade Tests
  • Trial Pits
  • Power Probes
  • Sample Probes
  • Gas Tests
  • Standpipes
  • Soakaway Tests
  • Plate Bearing Tests
  • Static Cone Penetration Tests (CPT)
  • Laboratory testing

Occasionally we will use specialist geophysical techniques such as ground radar or resistivity, but for more deep-seated applications the genuine usefulness of these methods has proved to be limited.

Most importantly, all of the field work is in the context of what we have already researched on the history and geology of the site, using both our own extensive archive of maps and records covering East Anglia and external public or private sources.

It has always been our policy to measure levels (to Ordnance Datum) and give grid references for all exploratory holes as a matter of course. This not only makes for quick and accurate assimilation, but also enables us to cross refer to other work by having all our data fixed absolutely on a three dimensional grid.
